HEAVENLY BODIES
White Dwarf
Heavily Bodied

Here’s a very welcome addition to Philadelphia’s ever-expanding outer-limit sounds. White Dwarf pulses with an uneasy throb that’ll make any reasonably paranoid person double check the deadbolt before retiring to a night of restless sleep. This is the type of spaced-out free psychedelia that some folks chase for a lifetime, and Philadelphia’s Heavenly Bodies caught it on their first major outing. The record is netted by Dustin Burrows’ sizzling atmospheric strum. And for anybody who knows the guy, the patience he shows here could be shocking. Not a single unnecessary or erratic move to be heard. On percussion, lapsteel, and loops, the mild-mannered Shaun Bailey rattles things along for a few excruciating minutes until the death march at the end of the first side offers relief. Grounding the whole thing is Ashley Burrows, a lady of very little nonsense, on bass. Using just two of her four strings, she tugs each of the four pieces on White Dwarf back to earth with an economy of movement uncommon among those who mess around in music. On the title track, her instrument plods along with a two note repetitive thud, and it’s downright thrilling when she lands on a third. Heavenly Bodies don’t mess around.

Heavenly Bodies first showed themselves at the 2019 Free Concert Series, climbing up on the stage at Ortlieb’s to an anxious packed house on a sweaty summer night. The band knocked the dust out of everybody’s ears and just about shook the roof off that sucker. White Dwarf, recorded in the rural heat of South Jersey at the Jerkstore the following August, shows that same taste and restraint that left a bunch of us in stupefied delight that night.
